Food waste has become a hot topic recently, with public outrage with the amount of food waste we throw away as a nation. Where possible, everyone should be less wasteful when it comes to food, but we understand that not all food waste is avoidable. Food waste such as eggshells, bones and banana skins will always need to be thrown away.

So for the food waste which is unavoidable, we should be making sure that it is recycled, so it is not 100% wasted.

Did you know, food waste collections can be provided for around £1 per collection?

At Cardiff Council, all the food waste we collect, whether from a household or business, is sent to an Anaerobic Digestor. This facility, run by Welsh Water, uses a range of scientific processes to alter our food waste to create a valuable product.

There are two main products which are created at this facility:

The first is Biogas, which is used to run the facility, making it self-sufficient.

The second is Digestate, which is used as a fertiliser for agricultural purposes. This in turn means that our original food waste is helping to grow more food, which could then be recycled again to grow even more.
